GmbH, the name being simply the German legal term of a limited company similar to Inc. or Ltd., was founded in Berlin by Serhat Isik and Benjamin A. Huseby in 2016, as a project to use the medium of fashion to respond to current events in the world. Drawing deeply on personal experiences as children of muslim immigrants in Europe, GmbH quickly gained a cult following for its sharply cut and modern silhouettes, with a strong story to match. From politics, ecology and club culture, GmbH engages with big issues through their own lived experiences.

At the core of GmbH is storytelling using the craft of garment making. The clothes are cut to both enhance and protect the body, accentuating a modern athletic silhouette. Huseby and Isik are joint creative directors of GmbH, only splitting their tasks when Huseby shoots their campaigns and Isik cuts the patterns. Unique for a young fashion label, is that all the patterns are cut by one of the designers. Whether it’s a hoodie or jacket, Isik, gives every GmbH garment a unique signature through the cut.

Being deeply concerned with the environmental impact of fashion, their first collections were made entirely from materials that would otherwise just be left in storage or go to waste. As the collections have grown, they now include a diverse choice of materials and techniques to lower GmbH’s footprint: replacing synthetics with natural fibres, bio-based and recycled polyamide, reclaimed clothes upcycled into new ones, organic and recycled cotton and working primarily with European factories with high ethical and environmental standards.

GmbH’s aim is to use their platform to reach beyond fashion, build a community and take their socio-political concerns into practice. This will in the near future take the form of exhibitions, events, publications and collaborations with artists, performers and local communities.
